Vape battery safety, taken seriously
Vape battery safety comes down to using the right battery, the right charger, and never ignoring damage. Most incidents happen from mismatched batteries, wrong chargers, or physical damage — all fully avoidable. Here’s exactly what to do and what to avoid.
If a battery swells, smokes, leaks, or overheats
Stop using it immediately. Move the device away from anything flammable, onto a non-flammable surface outdoors if possible, and do not attempt to charge, puncture, or continue using it. If it catches fire, do not use water on a lithium battery fire — evacuate the area and contact civil defence. Dispose of damaged batteries at a proper battery recycling point, never in regular household trash.
What to do
Two simple habits prevent almost every battery issue.
✅ Read your device’s instructions
- Understand the manufacturer’s recommendations before first use
- No instructions included? Contact the manufacturer directly
- Always follow the manufacturer’s specific requirements — device chemistries vary
✅ Keep devices away from children and pets
- Store devices and spare batteries somewhere children can’t reach
- Never leave a charging device unattended near pets or kids
What to avoid
Every one of these has caused real battery incidents. None of them are worth the risk.
🚫 Damaged or wet batteries
- Replace any battery that’s been damaged or gotten wet
- Check the outer insulation jacket for visible damage before use
- Never remove or use a battery with a missing insulation jacket
- Contact the manufacturer if your device itself is damaged
🚫 The wrong battery
- Only use batteries rated for your specific device
- Never mix old and new batteries, or different brands, together
- Don’t mix batteries with different charge levels or mAh ratings
- Replacing multiple batteries? Replace them all at once
🚫 Loose batteries in your pocket
- Keep spare batteries in a proper case, not loose
- Never let batteries touch coins, keys, or other metal objects
🚫 Extreme temperatures
- Never leave your device in direct sunlight
- Never store your vape inside a parked car — see our UAE heat damage guide below
- Avoid freezing cold exposure too
🚫 The wrong charger
- Never use a phone or tablet charger on your vape
- Always use the charger that came with the device
- Charge on a clean, flat, hard, non-flammable surface
- Charge somewhere you can see it — never overnight, never unattended. Full explainer: Can You Leave a Vape Charging Overnight?
🚫 Reversed polarity
- Always follow the manufacturer’s + / – markings
- Improper installation can cause serious personal injury — take the extra five seconds to check
🚫 Disabling safety features
- Never remove or bypass a device’s built-in safety cutoffs, vent holes, or protection circuits
- These features exist specifically to stop overheating and short circuits — disabling them removes your only line of defence
- If a safety feature seems faulty, stop using the device and contact the manufacturer rather than working around it
